How can I optimize my homepage for an optimal width of 800 or 1024 pixels?
What are the minimum requirements for a homepage with WordPress?
When designing and editing a homepage, the question always arises as to which specific browser functions and which options are used by the visitor when calling up their own homepage.
That’s why I’m asking myself, what, for example, is the smallest resolution that most people use? Which browsers are used the most? What graphic resolution/color depth is used? Which plugins are used, like Flash, or Java?
I have to say right away, please don’t use advertisements based on Java or menus that happen on Java.
Homepage Optimization – For which resolution do I optimize? 1024 or 800 width as resolution?
Many years ago or a few years ago a resolution of about eight hundred pixel width was the standard for the design of a homepage, so this has changed a bit in the last years.
In the last years I have optimized my resolution for a 19 inch monitor in a resolution of 1280 pixels, but I have to admit that I have been thinking about optimizing my homepage to a smaller resolution.
Why own homepage resolution of a width of 1024?
Netbooks, smartphones, have increased in the last one to two years. These devices usually have a resolution of eight hundred up to 1024 resolution pixels. Therefore the design of a homepage with a resolution of 1280 pixels for 19 inch TFT screens is no longer up to date.
For this reason I have optimized the width of the design so that the page can also be displayed well on smaller computer devices.
With reduced width, it was to implement a 160 pixel wide skyscraper as an advertisement in the homepage, the actual content area is about 640 pixels wide, and the navigation area is about 200 pixels wide. These possibilities can be well displayed with a resolution of 1024 pixels. The design is therefore 1024 pixels wide and fits all common devices, such as smartphones, tablets or netbooks.
Homepage – Width – Optimization
During the analysis, I noticed that about ten percent of all visitors still use a resolution of about 1024. The question is, of course, whether this resolution comes from the devices themselves, or whether these visitors use larger monitors, but simply shrink the browser window. Nevertheless, I think it makes more sense to use a resolution that contains the lowest common denominator.
The whole thing should of course also harmonize with devices that have a small resolution of eight hundred pixels, such as small smartphones.
How important is the width of a design in WordPress to me?
My intention behind it is that I can implement a 160 pixel wide advertisement in the area of design. This advertising should be visible, but also content related, so that the visitors can be offered a good experience while surfing on the homepage, and they can use for further information the possibility to click advertising.
Homepage – Operating systems – which operating system to optimize? Visitor numbers Linux, Windows, Apple and Homepage.
On which browsers and on which operating system do I test? It must be said that Microsoft’s operating systems stand in a very large proportion of about eighty percent compared to a proportion of about ten percent Apple operating system, and a very small proportion of about five percent Linux operating system. It should also be borne in mind that, for example, the Visitor numbers of Linux also on the large scale rather come that many topics refer to a homepage about Linux/Ubuntu, and one must also then consider that these visitors naturally also use a Linux operating system.
I have taken all these values from Google analytics.
I’m sure not all of you have an Apple at home, but it should at least be tested extensively on Windows operating system. These are the usual Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.
I myself test my homepage on a Windows operating system using a VMware and myself I use a current Ubuntu and hereby test it on Google Chrome and a current Mozilla Firefox version.
Homepage optimization – Which browsers do I test for my homepage?
I limit myself to testing browsers that comply with the current standard. That would be:
- Internet Explorer 8, 9; the current Firefox version, and also the current Google Chrome version.
- I don’t test older browsers, because these places also represent a security risk from a security perspective, and should therefore not be used by users.
That’s why it doesn’t make sense for me to test on older browsers.
I can also see from the statistics how many percent use Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer. I will confine myself to the versions mentioned.
Which additional functions should a homepage contain or not contain? Flash yes or no on homepage?
Flash and Java Script is available on almost all browsers of my visitors. This offers the possibility to insert advertising in the Flash format, or videos.
Java should never be used in menus or navigation or as advertising. The performance of Java is not to be used in the Internet and represents a deterrence risk for each visitor of a homepage. The loading times can be unbearably long due to Java.
Mobile devices on your own homepage – smartphones, resolution, homepage.
What is the percentage of mobile devices on my homepage? These could, for example, be current smartphones. My homepage is searched for a very small percentage of smartphones or mobile devices.
Therefore it makes little sense to reduce the width or the resolution of the design of the homepage even further, or to concentrate on this audience, which visits my site with very low resolutions < eight hundred pixels.
An alternative for these visitors with small resolutions would be to use a special design that is turned on as soon as mobile devices visit the homepage.
Conclusion – Homepage: which width, 1024 ,800, test on which browsers / Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer
I hope that this small contribution has brought you a little bit closer which criteria for optimization are relevant for my homepage.
Which possibilities do you have, which possibilities for optimization should you use for your homepage, and which test criteria should you get involved with, if you want to achieve an optimal surf for your visitors.
Test at least on browsers, current Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox, and Google Chrome browser versions.
In terms of resolutions you should have tested a width of eight hundred pixels and a width of at least 1024 pixels.
The lowest common denominator here should catch your eye based on your visitor numbers:
- your main content should be readable at a resolution of eight hundred pixels. However, all functions of your homepage can only be visible with a width of 1024 pixels.
- The use of a homepage design that is only available on a width of 1280 Pixelnall possibilities should be avoided.
If you take this into account in this order, you won’t be able to find an optimal WordPress design.
